A trip, an encounter and a dream
It was a bright, sunny Saturday morning when we set off from the Breakfast Club for Hull New Theatre. We were off to see ‘The BFG’ (The Big Friendly Giant). The children were a buzz of excitement, and before long we were in the little garden waiting to go into the Theatre. The children were very patient and remarkably well behaved and a pleasure to be with.
My journey to this exciting Theatre trip had started a few months earlier when I had my first encounter with Hull YFC. A ‘chance’ meeting with Anna, Chris and their children one Sunday afternoon hooked me. Can we call any providential meeting ‘chance’? It is all part of a bigger plan. The Breakfast Club, only a few hundred yards from my doorstep, has been a wonderful opportunity for me to join the local community and be part of a wider Christian presence in the Boulevard area. The club is a golden opportunity to share with other Christians, as we interact with the children before they start their ‘working’ day at school. To engage in a loving caring way, to feed them physically, to give them an opportunity to relax, play a game, talk, or just sit. What a gift to give to these children every day, no wonder so many come back to visit long after they have grown up and left.
Back to the theatre: the BFG was wonderful. His job was to mix up dreams and blow them through a trumpet into the rooms of sleeping children. Sophie, an orphan, goes with him but things go wrong when the other Giants want to tuck into the children of the world. So Sophie and the BFG enlist the help of the RAF and even the Queen, to help them in their mission.
God has mixed up a dream for Hull YFC and the families they work with. I’m not sure that the RAF or even the Queen would be of any help to us in fulfilling this dream, but we have each other. As Christians, together we can fulfill the mission of Christ here in Hull. I look forward to the next exciting trip with the Breakfast Club, and to many more mornings enjoying the company of the children before school begins.
