Scratch nativity
Christmas is always a really special time for us at HYFC. We have so much to celebrate and be grateful for and out of that we have some fantastic opportunities to share a bit more of our faith with the families that we know here on the Boulevard. With the angel parade in West Hull coming to an end in 2008, we decided that for Christmas 2009 we would create our own Christmas Celebration to share with the children and parents who attend our Breakfast Club.
We used the ever popular nativity play as a way for everyone to be involved in acting out God’s story at Christmas (with a “no previous acting experience necessary” script put together by Fran!). With parts quickly assigned as people arrived everyone set about making a great mess, creating costumes and props for the play. With minimal rehearsing of lines the children then performed their nativity with great gusto and a bit of direction from the team. A few carols were strategically slipped into the script, allowing the adults to join in with some singing, and the whole performance was a huge success.
Using the characters from the nativity we spent some time thinking about our own relationships with Jesus today. Some related to the scared shepherds, while others, like the busy inn keepers, felt they had no time for Jesus this Christmas. Some, like the angels, were happy to sing God’s praises. Whatever their reaction, everyone had the chance to see their part in the story of Jesus coming to earth. The events may have seemed messy and chaotic, but it was a special time of sharing God through fun and creativity. Our prayer for these young children and their parents is that the seeds that are planted through these special events will be ones that God then uses, as he reveals himself to each of them.
