Crew Capers
Frontier Camp is always a highlight in the HYFC calendar and this year was no exception. On the first day of the summer holidays 2 minibuses and a car laden with people and luggage set off to North Coates, near Cleethorpes. This year, as well as taking 21 campers, we were also taking 2 junior leaders, known on camp as ‘Crew’. Jordan and John-Paul have both been to camp before as campers and this year returned to be part of a team of older teenagers who would help out with preparing meals, washing up, serving food, helping run sports activities and a whole host of other tasks to help make camp run smoothly. I had the privilege of working alongside the Crew for the week and watching our young people throw themselves into their jobs with an enthusiasm that made us proud.
Being on camp always seems to be about working hard and playing hard and the Crew certainly live up to this. While there seemed to be a never ending list of tasks that their help was required with everyday we had plenty of fun along the way. John Paul kept us all well entertained with his attempts at potato peeling, which began to resemble an extreme sport (plenty of blood and blue plasters involved). Jordan showed us her daring side as she conquered the high ropes course on one of the day trips. She undoubtedly won the prize for falling with style (upside down, though thankfully well-harnessed).
Amidst all of this the Crew also found time for a daily quiet time together, a chance to continue to explore and develop their faith. It was interesting to listen to our two telling their life stories and exciting to hear of the important part that they both felt HYFC had had in shaping their paths. Jordan and John-Paul have both journeyed from breakfast club through our youth groups, camps and Tuesday meal to the point where they are now taking roles helping us run these activities. It is so rewarding to watch this growth come to fruition and also to think about some of this year’s campers making similar journeys over the years to come.
