Hull Youth For Christ

Breakfast Club

The Breakfast club was established in September 1999. It began as a partnership with Boulevard Baptist Church. The vision for the Breakfast club was and is to create a family atmosphere so that the children's day can begin in a wholesome way. It was obvious that a few of the children we new were not able to have breakfast at home and there were those who just didn't bother before going to school.

The club is a place where we spend time with the children on a regular basis, strengthening relationships and providing the opportunity to help with their school work and reading. It's a safe place where they can learn informally about life and faith in the company of the team and parents. Our desire is also for the community to see that God is busy every day not just on a Sunday.

As well as the regular day-to-day running of the club we also have a free full English cooked breakfast at the end of each term, where parents, local police, community wardens and teachers are invited to join in the fun. The highlight of the year is the Breakfast Club Family Fun Day Out. In the past we have gone to the seaside, as well as to Newcastle and York courtesy of Virgin trains.

The most rewarding aspect of the club is being able to watch children, parents, paid staff and volunteers develop and grow. Joe's comment probably sums it up: "I feel a lot younger now than I did a month ago, when we first started." Joe was 77 when he made that comment in 1999; he still regularly helps to make the toast.

Breakfast club is free to all and is sustained through the generosity of Gregg's the bakers, ASDA Supermarket, as well as various churches and individuals who donate cereals on a regular basis. We are currently the 'Charity of the Year' for the Sainsbury's on Hessle Road voted for by local residents. They are supporting the Breakfast club with fundraising events.
